Wellness Patches vs Supplements: What's the Difference?

October 12, 2026 · A Better Day

Quick answer: Supplements (capsules, tablets, gummies and powders) are swallowed and absorbed through your digestive system. Wellness patches sit on your skin and are designed to release ingredients through it over several hours. Supplements have been studied far more. Patches are mainly chosen for convenience: there's nothing to swallow, and one patch can cover most of a day. Neither replaces a balanced diet or medical advice.

How do supplements work?

When you swallow a supplement, it travels through your stomach and intestines, where ingredients are broken down and absorbed into your bloodstream. Some of what you swallow is processed by your liver before it reaches the rest of your body, which is one reason the amount your body actually uses can differ from the amount on the label. Food, timing and the form of an ingredient can all make a difference.

How do wellness patches work?

A patch holds its ingredients in an adhesive layer against your skin. Over the time you wear it, ingredients are designed to move through the outer layer of skin. Skin is a strong barrier, though, and in general only small, fat-soluble molecules pass through easily. That's why the formula and patch design matter. We explain this in more detail in What Are Wellness Patches and How Do They Work?

Research Many ingredients well studied Research still limited
Convenience Easy if you're used to pills Nothing to swallow, mix or measure
Common downsides Pill fatigue, stomach upset for some people Possible skin irritation from the adhesive

Which one is right for you?

It depends on what you're looking for:

  • If you want the most researched option, many supplement ingredients have more evidence behind them, and a pharmacist can help you choose.
  • If you dislike swallowing pills or often forget to take them, a patch can be an easier habit to stick to.
  • If you want a routine cue, putting on a patch at the same time each day, like before bed, can become part of your wind-down or start-of-day ritual.
  • If you have a health condition or a diagnosed deficiency, talk to your doctor first. They can recommend the right treatment and dose.

Can you use patches and supplements together?

Some people do, but it's worth checking with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if both contain similar ingredients or you take any medication. Some plant extracts and supplements can interact with medicines.

How are they regulated in Australia?

In Australia, products that make therapeutic claims, including many vitamins and herbal supplements, are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Before buying any product, it's worth checking what it claims, reading the full ingredient list, and asking your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Are patches better than supplements?

Not necessarily. Supplements are better researched overall. Patches mainly offer a different, more convenient format. The right choice depends on your needs and preferences.

Do patches work faster than supplements?

Patches are designed to release ingredients gradually while you wear them, rather than all at once. How quickly anything works depends on the ingredient, the product and the person.

Can I take a supplement and wear a patch with the same ingredient?

Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, so you don't double up on the same ingredient.

Are wellness patches safe for everyone?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, taking medication or have a medical condition, talk to your healthcare professional before use. Stop use if you notice any skin irritation.
